Education is a right and not a privilege and children in some remote corners of Kenya struggle to learn without basic school materials.
Kids in Kenya is a not for profit registered charity (CFN 21049 . ABN 44241876636) aiming to improve the education of disadvantaged children in a remote corner of Kenya by raising funds, purchasing basic school supplies in Nairobi and personally delivering them to ensure that the materials reach their destination.
We will need to raise more funds, and we are now looking for assistance in providing funds both for the immediate supply of basic school materials and for moving to more ambitious activities such as provision of bursaries or scholarships for gifted students to gain a secondary education and perhaps in the future to go on to university.
Our immediate goal is to raise funds to:
establish a steady supply of resources to maintain the provision of paper, textbooks, pencils, all needed for the daily work of teaching and learning
improve numbers of the school buildings, most of which are dilapidated mud brick buildings with earthen floors and practically no furniture such as desks and chairs
establish staff rooms as part of the school facilities where teachers may prepare lessons (at present they don’t have even these facilities)
create libraries equipped with basic reference sources such as dictionaries, encyclopedias and other reference books, as well as a range of appropriate literature, history and science books that would enrich the rather basic text books that we have provided so far. There is no electricity in the region, so television and computers are not options for the schools, though good resource books and maps would be very helpful.
build more sanitary toilets for the pupils and teachers to use ( the toilets are only rather insanitary holes in the ground (long drops) and the rubber thongs we provide are for the children, who are bare foot, to go to the toilets with some safety and cleanliness)
provide solar lamps for night learning
Our longer terms goal is to raise funds to:
create bursaries for deserving children to go on from primary to secondary school (this will involve funds to support fees, provide textbooks and other essential items, assist students travel away to the secondary schools, pay for uniforms) and lodging
provide scholarships to send students to university, perhaps even in Australia
(this will also involve fees, textbook allowance, travel expenses and living allowance).
We have so far made two trips to 6 schools in the Siaya District with truck loads of supplies, such as pens and paper, text books and soccer balls and in July this year we are again off to shop in Nairobi and make the arduous journey to the schools with further supplies.
At present we are concentrating on the Siaya District in north western Kenya, near Lake Victoria and in the near future hope to expand the area to include more schools that are in desperate need of supplies.
We are not sponsored or endorsed by any religious or political organisation and we rely upon donations to fund the project.
